Welcome to The Riverscape Ecology Lab
Work in our lab focuses on the conservation and sustainable management of freshwater fish diversity, understanding reasons for its decline, and developing approaches for mitigating threats in Texas, the southern Great Plains, and beyond. We address questions regarding species- and community-level change across spatial and temporal scales using a variety of study approaches, including meta-analyses, field experiments, natural snapshot and trajectory experiments, landscape modeling, and molecular techniques. Our work strongly emphasizes how anthropogenic environmental manipulations, either destructive or restorative in nature, cause shifts in fish abundance, distribution, and community structure.

Rebecca, Johnathan, and Josh attended the Society for Freshwater Science meeting in Philadelphia in June.
Field seasons was one of the busiest in the history of the REL:
Tomasz led research on the effects of groundwater depletion on fishes in the Red River Basin; Rose led research on movement of Western Mosquitofish; Hayden led research on Llano River Carpsucker; Jake Barrett led research on movement of fishes in the San Antonio River; Tom Dodson led research on long-term and short-term changes in stream fish assemblages in the Colorado River Basin (of Texas); Rebecca Mangold led research on fishes in tributaries to the Sabine River; Johnathan Ellard led research on fishes in Village Creek (and set a new record for most times a graduate student has been flooded out of their study area); Jake Wolff led research on competition between native Centrarchid fishes and introduced Rio Grande Cichlid.
All of this work would not have been possible without a wonderful crew of undergraduate scholars and technicians:
Lucas Stevens, Davis Stairs, Bryce Clements, Haley Rivillas, Emily Long, Judd Roth, Ryan Rutledge, and Lynette Aelvoet.
